Congratulations to Sudhanshu Bhushan and colleagues on the publication of their latest manuscript in the PNAS. In this paper the authors identify ontogenic and functional heterogeneity in the macrophage population of murine testis and epididymis under steady-state and infection conditions, leading to important insights into the potential mechanisms underlying inflammation-related male infertility.

Congratulations to Ammira Akil and colleagues on the publication of their review article in Cells journal. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a serious and growing health issue, so new and innovative therapies are urgently needed. In this review, the authors take recent advances in knowledge of epigenetic factors in T1D and discuss how they can be applied therapeutically. A must-read for anyone in the diabetes and epigenetics fields, and a fascinating insight into the combination of these two research areas towards the development of novel T1D therapies.

Congratulations to Souhaila Al Khodor on the publication of their paper on the effects of vitamin D supplementation on the gut microbiota. The topic of vitamin D deficiency and supplementation has become controversial in recent years, but this paper aims to bring a level of clarity to the relatively new discussion of the potential two-way interaction of vitamin D and the gut microbiome. Excitingly, it seems that differences in the gut microbiota might contribute to some individuals ability to absorb vitamin D, which could be highly relevant in those countries where up to 80% of people have sub-optimal levels of the vitamin. Congratulations to Jiaxi Zhou and colleagues on the publication of their paper on human embryonic megakaryopoiesis. The authors generated the first comprehensive single-cell MK RNA sequencing dataset using primary human tissues, which led to the identification of distinct sub-populations of MK early in development. These data highlighted the emergence of potential functional specialisations in MK during embryogenesis, and revealed the distinct developmental trajectories of different MK subgroups. It was a real pleasure working together on this manuscript, and we wish the group every success in 2021!
